Joan is a Professor at UBC Vancouver’s School of Nursing. She is also the Chair in Health Promotion and Cancer Prevention as well as the Director for the Institute for Healthy Living and Chronic Disease Prevention and an Affiliate Scienctist for the BC Cancer Prevention Agency. Joan’s teaching interests and responsiblities include: Qualitiative research methods including grounded theory, ethnography, narrative inquire, phenomenology and ethnology; Mentor, CIHR Strategic Research Training Program in Population Intervention for Chronic Disease Prevention: A Pan-Canadian Program; Mentor, CIHR Strategic Research Traning Program; and Mentor, CIHR Strategic Research Training Program. Joan’s research interests include:Social contexts of health behaviour, Cancer prevention and screening, Tobacco control, Women’s health, Risk perception and risk communication, Predictive testing and Pallative care.
